Tin Can Man set for action as pupils win recycling prize

ECO-minded youngsters from Doncaster's Woodlands Primary School have won a competition to promote recycling.

The school's Woodlands Recycling Rebels scooped top prize in a contest to create a campaign to encourage people to recycle in parks.

The competition, set by tool repair and maintenance company CH Power Tools, was part of this year's Technology Challenge organised by Business and Education South Yorkshire.

More than 150 primary and secondary students from six Doncaster schools entered. They were asked to design a recycling station to be placed in a 'green park' planned next to a business park in Carcroft.

They also had to come up with a name or slogan for the park and design marketing material to go with the campaign.

The winning team was Elanna Brown, Billy Marshall, Kayleigh Warren, Chealcie Tomlinson, Olivia Bennett, Tim Kirkham, Jessica Gardner and Bradley Wicks. The children made a number of models including a tin can man positioned at the entrance to the park, pointing directions as people drive into each recycling zone.

Helen Rann, assistant headteacher at the school, said: "We are thrilled to win and to have made a contribution towards promoting recycling."
