The bottom line on tackling yeast infections in the gut

A SHEFFIELD specialist in Colon Hydrotherapy says that people with a range of health problems - including candidiasis can benefit from the water based therapy.

Last week a feature in Healthy Living claimed that people with the yeast infection were not recommended to have Colonic Irrigation to clear their system of an overgrowth.

But Jay Judge who has over 18 years experience and runs a successful practice, The Sheffield Colon Hydrotherapy in Netheredge says this is not the case - as she has helped hundreds of people with the condition over the years.

She explained: "Candida Albicans is a natural yeast which lives in the gut of all people above the age of six months and at low levels is just one of many of the body's intestinal flora.

"If however this yeast increases to a level that the body's usual defences can no longer control, we call it candidiasis. A number of symptoms will indicate that the candida levels are out of control."

These include recurrent or chronic infections, craving for sweet and carbohydrate rich foods, persistent digestive problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, heartburn, indigestion, bloating, gas, abdominal distension, constipation, diarrhoea or both, asthma and arthritis.

She also says that sore throats, nasal congestion, coughs, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and ME can also be linked to candidiasis. Some of the causes of candidiasis are prolonged use of broad spectrum antibiotics, courses of cortisones or steroids, the contraceptive pill or HRT. A high carbohydrate diet, especially of sugars and white flour foods on which yeast cells thrive, regularly drinking alcohol can also feed the growth of yeast.

Fermentation of yeasts within the system produce many types of toxins which then pass into the body causing ill health, whilst at the same time they spoil the nutrients within the gut and create toxic coatings.

Latest sport But cleaning the colon directly via colon hydrotherapy will reverse this situation.

However people are always advised to see their GP first as symptoms can be linked to other health problems.

Explained Jay, who has been a full time colon hydrotherapist in Sheffield since qualifying in April 1991: “As candida originates in the large bowel or colon it makes a great deal of sense to attack it in its stronghold which is why colon hydrotherapy is such an effective treatment.

Colon hydrotherapy involves a, gentle infusion of purified warm water into the colon using no chemicals or drugs, herbal rinses are often used and whilst some, though not all, of the good bowel flora is removed, it is always replaced at the end of the treatment.

As it takes years for the colon to become clogged up with its own waste products a course of treatment will be needed to tackle the problem - combined with advice on diet, nutrition and the use of herbal remedies.

Jay says that all kinds of skin problems - acne, psoriasis, eczema - can usually benefit from a therapeutic course of colonic irrigation. She also helps arthritis patients and some cancer patients - though not all are suitable - and people who suffer from a range of digestive and bowel complaints including constipation.

She stressed that it is very important that people see a properly qualified, registered and insured practitioner who can advise them on whether the therapy is suitable for their condition.
