Taxi firm raising cash for charity

A DONCASTER taxi firm is hoping hundreds of passengers will back its drive to raise money for Breast Cancer Care Research UK

Alpha Mini Cabs, on Prince's Street, has asked its drivers to donate a proportion of their tips for the next three months and has pledged to match the amount collected.

With 120 vehicles, the company is Doncaster's second biggest cab firm and hopes to raise several thousands of pounds to help people and their families affected by the disease.

Co-owner Ali Asad Raja set up Alpha Mini Cabs with his business partner Shaheen Aktar 18 years ago and now hopes customers will contribute as much as possible to boost the final total.

Ali, aged 49, said: "Like many people we've had friends who have had breast cancer and thought it was a very worthwhile cause to support. "All our drivers are happy to back the initiative and when we add up the money collected at the end of May we'll make our own contribution and hopefully have a sizable cheque to present."

As well as giving tips, customers can make donations via collection boxes in the vehicles and town centre booking office from March 1.

Alpha, which offers long distance journeys as well as local travel, provides a 24-hour service every day of the year.

The company also has other charitable plans in the pipeline and hopes to raise money to support children with leukaemia later in the year.
