TAXI DANGER: Jaw broken in fare row

Anston woman Kirsty Breckney ended up with a broken jaw after being punched in the face and kicked in the head by Rotherham taxi driver Asif Hussain.

He was jailed last September for four years.

Ms Breckney, a nursery nurse, said she felt "lucky to be alive" after the attack, which was sparked after a row over the fare developed between her friend and the driver. Ms Breckney had stepped in to intervene, but ended up being punched to the ground.

She said after the case at Sheffield Crown Court: "People get taxis thinking they are doing the right thing to get home safely. It was unbelievable for him to turn on us the way he did over a few pounds."

n Star reader Kate, a 28-year-old Norwich Union employee, contacted us to tell us of an incident four years ago which has left her wary of travelling in taxis.

The black cab which had picked her up outside the Leadmill at 2am took an unusual route back to her home in Wisewood. "I was worried the fare was going to be more expensive and asked how much it would be. He told me that if I made it worth his while, it wouldn't cost me anything. He said: "You show me something and I won't charge you."

"I was shocked and frightened. I asked him to stop the car but he laughed and carried on until I started to open the window to scream. I didn't think to get the taxi number – I ran up a driveway.

"I didn't report it to police because I didn't think I'd get anywhere without information."

Kate said: "Women shouldn't take it for granted that they are safe in a taxi. We owe it to ourselves to be more safety-conscious."
