Swedish jobs boost
A SWEDISH hardware chain is set to hand Doncaster a jobs boost with plans to establish its second Yorkshire store in the borough.
And a haulage firm is providing further employment in the borough with plans to expand its operations in the borough.
Clas Ohlson expects to create between 30 and 35 full and part time shop posts when the store opens at the end of the year, while Nicholson's Doncaster Ltd expects to create up to 10 posts by an expansion.
It will be only the 11th store in the UK for the company, although it has been operating for 90 years in Sweden.
The company says it has now signed a lease for a site at the Frenchgate Centre in the town centre.
It follows its opening of a shop in Leeds in April.
Established in 1918 and now one of Sweden's biggest retailers, the firm says it aims to meet the needs of anybody running a home by offering affordable products in the areas of hardware, home, multimedia, electrical, and leisure, under one roof, with excellent levels of customer service.
The Doncaster store is scheduled to open in early December and stores in Norwich, Cardiff and Merry Hill will open at the same time.
Clas Ohlson already has seven stores operating in the UK, in Croydon, Manchester, Reading, Kingston-upon-Thames, Watford, Liverpool and Leeds.
When it opens, the Doncaster shop will cover over 19,000 square feet.
Mark Gregory, UK managing director, said: "We are very proud to be opening a Clas Ohlson store in Doncaster.
"The Frenchgate Centre is a great location for us in a vibrant shopping area. We will offer our usual extensive range of products across our hardware, home, multimedia, electrical and leisure categories. We can't be beaten on range, value or service."
Nicholson's new jobs in haulage will be created by a move from its current base at Hexthorpe Trading Park on Littlewood Street to a bigger site.
The move is part of a five-year plan which will also see new services introduced including the transportation of hazardous goods for UK chemical firms, and a same day UK courier service.
It is the latest jobs boost for the borough.
Last week, Tesco announced it would create around 175 new jobs with plans to change its Edenthorpe site off Thorne Road into a Tesco Extra Superstore, similar to its current site at Woodfield Plantation in Balby.
The move will nearly double the current workforce at the store.
And Royal Bank of Scotland announced that its Doncaster UKI Partnerships calls centre, which employs 779 people, will remain open.
