Suspension of activities as bridge building proves to be a model success

ENGINEERING experts from one of Doncaster's biggest firms went back to school - to show youngsters how to build bridges.

Staff from wire rope manufacturer Bridon visited Hungerhill School in Edenthorpe to show youngsters how its ropes are used in bridge projects from all around the world.

Then - using only wire, fishing line, screws, brackets, cardboard and wood - pupils made model suspension bridges to span a 500mm gap. Their designs had to be strong enough to bear a 20kg weight at the centre.

Schools taking part included Hungerhill, Barnby Dun Primary, Kirk Sandall Juniors, Dunsville Primary and Canon Popham C of E Primary.

The event was part of this year's Doncaster Technology Challenge, organised by Business and Education South Yorkshire.

Spokeswoman Mary Milburn said: "This exciting challenge gave pupils the chance to work alongside engineers who do this for a living, giving them a real insight into the world of work."
