Support for students with finance problems
DONCASTER College is launching a fund to help students affected by the national Educational Maintenance Allowance crisis.
Government computer problems have led to thousands of students across the country not being registered properly for allowances for the coming term, meaning students could be losing out on 30 a week.
College managers have met with Mark Haysom, the national chief executive of the Learning and Skills Council, to discuss the situation and have agreed to launch a special fund to make sure no student is adversely affected by the problems.
College principal Rowland Foote said: "Even though this is through no fault of the college, it is our duty to look after the welfare of all our students.
"We totally understand the financial pressures there are on students, especially at this time of the credit crunch.
"We will make sure that no student is out of pocket because of the Government's problems and we will be pressurising the Department for Children Schools and Families into making sure this situation never arises again."
College students who think they may be affected by the problems should contact the financial support office at the college on 01302 553760 or email Belinda.marshall@ don.ac.uk or visit them at room N5.616 at The Hub.
