Style? Not here darlings
JUST make sure you're all glammed up if you drop by the Art in the Gardens show at Sheffield's Botanical Gardens this weekend.
Fashion designer Elizabeth A Edwards will be running a beady eye over you.
And she doesn't always like what she sees.
Her open air catwalk fashion show has been one of the biggest attractions for the last two years but she sighs for the city's fashion sense.
Elizabeth, who moved to Sheffield six years ago, says: "I left London after 20 years in the fashion industry, right in the centre of everything.
"Every day is a fashion day. There is a real sense of fashion on the streets.
"When style gurus are looking for the next new hot thing to wear they walk around the streets and go to the clubs. But Sheffield is a whole different scene."
Elizabeth, who works from home for her online eco fashion business, sighs: "When I go back to London I feel like a country bumpkin."
The woman who graduated from St Martin's School of Art and served her apprenticeship under the late Jean Muir, and has dressed celebrities such as Jennifer Saunders, Victoria Wood, Joanna Lumley and Marianne Faithfull, says that the city lags far behind Manchester and Leeds.
But she does have a good word for us.
"People are very experimental with their hair but not very much on their clothing.
"When the Arctic Monkeys turned up at the Brits in 2008 dressed as country gentleman they were making a statement that fashion doesn't happen in Sheffield.
"The music scene is alive and vibrant and fashion should be moving with it as well."
Talking of music, one of her models will be Edie Renshaw, niece of Jarvis Cocker and daughter of former fashion model Saskia Renshaw.
Elizabeth, whose designs have been in H&M, Etam, Zara and BHS, almost wept when a local shop selling Vivienne Westwood shoes closed down .
But she has high hopes for Miriam Clegg, wife of the Deputy Prime Minister, bringing a bit of fashion sense to Sheffield.
Despite the recession, the organisers hope that the show, claimed to be the biggest open air art show in the north, will follow the lead of the recent Great Sheffield Art Show and surprise everyone with big turn-outs and lively sales.
They'll be wanting to top last year's attendance of 16,000 visitors viewing over 4,000 artworks.
This is the seventh annual show and highlights will include artists painting a portrait of radio presenter Toby Foster, a children's village, outdoor sculpture and Young Painter of the Year competition.
Admission is 5 for adults, children under 16 free. There is a special preview tomorrow evening - two for 6. Tickets from the gate house gift shop.
