Speed tests could determine wind farm plans
A PROPOSED wind farm at Thorpe Marsh has moved a step closer after Doncaster Council gave the go-ahead for tests to be carried out.
Members of the borough's planning committee unanimously backed the request for permission to set up equipment to measure the wind strength at the site in fields at Arksey Common Lane.
But Coun Mick Jameson asked council officers to ensure developer Simon Kerrison fully restored the site to its original state when the tests were completed.
The site is close to the former coal power station which closed in the 1990s.
The planning permission means Mr Kerrison can now go ahead with installing a 60m high mast to monitor wind speeds at the site over the next two years. If the findings show it to be viable, a wind farm could potentially follow which would require separate permission.
Council planning officer Mel Roberts said the test equipment would be visible from only a few houses.
It is the latest in a string of sites in Doncaster to be looked at as a possible wind farm location.
Turbines are set to be developed on land at Tween Bridge near Thorne after a compromise was reached with Robin Hood Airport.
