THERE’S a new look at The Gleadall house – and it’s coming to your TV screens soon.

Jean and Peter’s semi-detached in Wisewood was chosen for a makoever by Channel 4’s You Deserve This House, presented by Amanda Lamb, after friends nominated them for their community and charity work over the years – including £27,000 they raised for a scanner 40 years ago.

A bedroom, bathroom and ground floor extension were all renovated in 36 hours by a team of painters, builders and designers after Jean was whisked away for the weekend by her daughter.

“I got a call to say Jean had been nominated by local people for everything we have done in the past for the community but she was not to know a thing about it,” said Peter who met Jean at a city centre table tennis club in 1959 and who celebrates 50 years of marriage next year.

“We told her that Louisa was taking her for a spa weekend at Thoresby hall as a treat for her birthday. The team were here for the weekend and there were loads of them.

“I went and stayed with neighbours while they did it. They cut it a bit fine, the skip had only been taken away three minutes before she got back home, but they did it.”

Jean was astonished when she got home and the surprise was sprung.

“I just couldn’t believe it when I walked back in,” she said.

“I had no idea it was happening while I was away. Thanks to my daughter and granddaughter it’s exactly the way I would have done it myself. These rooms were really sad looking before but now they are fantastic. “I don’t know how much it cost to do them but it must have been a pretty penny. They look great now.”

The episode of You Deserve This House featuring the Gleadalls is on Channel 4 on July 17 at 11am.
