Skating put on ice for £250,000 Dome revamp

DONCASTER'S main ice rink has closed for a month while work is carried out to improve the venue.

Bosses at the Doncaster Dome have shut the Ice Caps rink, on Bawtry Road, which will be closed while workmen carry out a 250,000 re-urbishment on the site.

It is due to reopen on October 1, when the leisure centre celebrates its 21st birthday.

The work is expected to improve access to the rink.

Michael Hart, general manager of the Dome said: "The Ice Caps are now closed and the ice has been melted ready for an intensive four week refurbishment.

"A new reception area will be created for the Ice Caps and a great deal of behind-the- scenes plant work needs updating to ensure that we offer the best possible skating experience for our customers.

"We are all really looking forward to seeing the area benefit from a new painted theme and are delighted that we will be able to mark our 21st birthday with the official re-opening of the skating rink."

The refurbishment will include:

Repaired flooring.

Improved toilet areas.

New rink barriers.

A new caf area.

A new skate shop.

Mr Hart said: "Each year more than 350,000 people put on their skates and enjoy gliding and often falling over on our unusual shaped rink. We will be launching a new varied progamme of activity for the Ice Caps in October."
