Six schools register for academy details

TWO Doncaster primary schools and four secondary schools have registered to receive information on the Government's academy scheme.

But the headteacher at one of the borough's biggest schools believes schools are just looking at the options at this stage rather than making any commitments.

The Government has revealed Tickhill Estfeld Primary School and Conisbrough Ivanhoe Primary School have joined McAuley School, Campsmount School, Ridgewood School and Hayfield School in registering an interest in becoming Academies.

Gary sprakes, headteacher at Campsmount School, said: "I just want to keep abreast with changes and information on that which is available from central Government.

"With school status it's important that you keep up to date, and that is one of the reasons why we registered. We are not committing ourselves.

"We became a foundation trust school in 2009 and the governors and myself wanted to keep our options open.

"At the moment there are no plans to become an academy, and I think most of my colleagues have come from the same position.

"It is about gathering information at this stage rather than making a commitment."

Academies receive the same per-pupil funding as other schools in their local authority.

On top of this, they receive a grant to cover the extra services they have to provide, which will no longer be provided by the local authority. This extra amount varies from local authority to local authority.

Lord Hill, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools said: "I am delighted that so many schools have expressed an interest, and that over 900 outstanding schools are interested in becoming academies.

"We want schools to decide what's best for them, not politicians or bureaucrats."

Governors at Wickersley School, Rotherham, said academies would be divisive and damaging.
