School is helping tackle climate change

A DONCASTER primary school is set to become one of the greenest in the borough under plans to fit £20,000 solar panels.

Scawsby Saltersgate Junior School is among 80 UK schools selected to receive a grant in the second phase of the Co-operative's Green Energy for Schools scheme.

The photovoltaic panels are half funded through the Co-operative's scheme with match funding from the Government's Low Carbon Building Programme.

Solar energy company Solarcentury will install the panels, which will generate renewable electricity, reducing the school's reliance on fossil fuels while highlighting the issue of climate change.

A monitor screen in the school building will display how much energy the panels are generating and how much carbon dioxide they have saved to date. Schools will also be able to access their energy data on the Internet, along with educational materials which teachers can download for use in the classroom.

Headteacher Iris Foster added: "It is fantastic to be among the schools chosen to receive free solar panels through this generous Co-operative initiative.

"Schools have a vital role to play in educating the next generation about climate change and using this renewable energy technology to power our own premises will help us to bring that message home to pupils, parents and staff."

Sarah Klueter, the Co-operative's senior community manager, said: "It is appropriate we are now helping our local schools in this way. As well as cutting carbon dioxide emissions and saving the school money bills, the solar panels will serve as a reminder to the community of the need to tackle climate change."
