Round of golf spans all Britain

IDLE chit-chat over a pint led to a group of Doncaster golfers heading off for an epic round which spanned three countries...all in a day.

Two teams of golfers set off from the Blue Bell at Hatfield and completed rounds of golf at courses in England, Scotland and Wales before heading back home to beat the 24-hour deadline they had set themselves.

In the process they managed to raise 2,000 for the Help For Heroes charity.

It all started when Hatfield man John Hendley and a mate, Jim Butterley, were talking over a pint and decided to see if they could make some money through sponsorship for injured soldiers.

Both being keen golfers they decided they would attempt to play three games of golf in three countries in under 24 hours in two groups of four.

One group from Dunscroft Social Golf Society headed to Scotland, England and Wales and the other group from Hatfield and Thorne Golf Society went in the opposite direction.

After the courses were booked and sponsors found both groups gathered at the Blue Bell at a minute past midnight and headed off on their attempt.

"We arrived at Lockerbie in Scotland, at 3.45am, played a game then drove to Helsby in Cheshire for 10.30am and the last game was at Rhos-on-Sea, near Llandudno about 5pm.

"It was nice to get back home to get home for well-earned pint. Both teams completed the challenge successfully and from this we have raised in excess of 2,000," said John.

But the marathon golfing day has merely whetted their appetites for more fund raising for Help For Heroes so they have organised an Am-Am tournament to take place at Town Moor Golf Club on Thursday August 26.

The cost per player is 35, to include after game buffet, prize table, evening entertainment, a raffle and an auction.

Anyone wanting to enter the competition or sponsor the event can contact John Hendley on 07876 035449 or Jim Butterley on 07946 078230.
