RISING FROM THE ASHES: Record A-Level results at school ravaged by fire
EIGHT months ago, the school was devastated by fire - but Campsmount School has bounced back with record A-Level results.
The future looked bleak for pupils at the Norton site when a blaze destroyed most of the buildings in December.
But teenagers who sat their A Levels in the summer have beaten the odds by recording some of the school's best results despite the setback they suffered in the winter.
Average points score for the pupils who picked up their results yesterday increased by 8.7 per cent, from 652 last year to 709 this year.
Headteacher Andy Sprakes was unable to confirm if they were best-ever results, but said they were certainly the best at the school for at least five years.
Pupils achieved their success despite having to take their lessons in the offices of an Askern business for several weeks whilst temporary classrooms where assembled at the school.
Mr Sprakes said: "Our results have improved since last year, which is quite remarkable considering what everyone went through after the fire in December.
"The majority of the students have got to their first choice of university despite the concerns that have been raised over places nationally.
"I think it is some consolation after what has happened. Ultimately, we are here to help out students be successful and that is what we have done."
Among the outstanding success stories at the school was 18-year-old Peter Wigglesworth, whose three A grades and a B has earned him a place at Oxford University to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
Peter, who wants to go into politics or the civil service, was delighted with his results.
He said: "The fire obviously made things very difficult for us as pupils, coming just at the wrong time before the exams in January.
"It was very hectic in the weeks which followed but we all managed to pull together. I'm certainly very pleased about the way things have turned out, and also very relieved."
He added: "There were a lot of concerns after the fire because people were not sure what was going to happen.
"I think the school did as much as it could to help us through and did its best to ensure we got the best teaching we could.
"I was taught in the Askern UK office block near a wood yard for a couple of months - but it has all turned out well."
Doncaster Council was reporting its best-ever results for A Level performance in the borough as a whole.
More than 60 firefighters tackled the fire at Campsmount Technology College. The gymnasium, library and a number of classrooms were saved but the rest of the school was gutted.
Mobile buildings were later brought to the site as a temporary school was put together. It is not yet certain when the building will be rebuilt, after the Government included Campsmount on a list of school building projects to be axed.

- Wasted calls Having wasted thousands ending out all those letters, Labour now wastes more by ringing up households to do a questionnaire. Has anyone else had these calls? I can’t be the only one. I didn’t catch the name of the Labour representative because I wasn’t really interested, then I thought I would give her the benefit of the doubt and hear her out. She just wanted to ask which party I vote for, who I’d like to see in Government and who I vote for in the local elections. I had great pleasure in answering but what a waste of time and money. Having got the answers what good will it do, what can it possibly achieve? Labour stupidity. K Hammond
