Red Lion is a roaring success with CAMRA beer group

ONE of Doncaster's oldest pubs has won a seasonal award from the town's real ale drinkers.

The historic Red Lion in the Market Place has been voted Winter Pub of the Season by Doncaster Campaign for Real Ale and will be receiving the award on January 30.

Its place in Doncaster's history was created when local gentry met there in 1776 to found the St Leger race which has become one of the world's classic horseraces.

Since it was taken over from another chain by J D Wetherspoon's, CAMRA members have been impressed by its increased range of beers, with many made in South Yorkshire.

A Doncaster CAMRA spokesman said the ales are always kept in good condition and to high standards, which passed two separate spot-checks by Cask Marque, a beer watchdog organisation.

Credit for the improvement has been given to Paul Sanderson "as he is responsible for the quality and choice of beers available at the bar in his role as cellarman."
