Pupils have write idea in bringing authors to book

A DOZEN schoolchildren have become book reviewers for a top retailer as part of an innovative education initiative.

Children from Shaw Wood Primary School, Armthorpe, have been taking part in voluntary extra-curricular activities at Doncaster Children's University.

They have been writing reviews for the Frenchgate branch of Waterstone's bookstore, with the help of Doncaster College and Doncaster Council's Schools Library Service.

The children spent time with the schools library service in class and at the College's Hub campus to develop their reviews which are now on show in the bookstore for everyone to see.

Paul Horsman, Children's Book Seller at Waterstone's, said: "We have had some children write reviews for us before but this was the first time we had worked with the Children's University and we've been very impressed.

"The reviews are really good and I'm sure we'll be working with the Children's University again."

Linda Ward, Doncaster Children's University Project Director, said: "It's really good to see children getting excited about books and about reading. This book club has given the children an opportunity to become book reviewers for a few weeks and has proved to be very popular; it has also given us the chance to work closely with other organisations that have shared their expertise with the children."

Doncaster Children's University aims is to raise children's and young people's achievements, attainment, aspirations and self-esteem through enjoyable, exciting and "hands on" methods.
