Praise from inspectors raises university status bid

AN INDEPENDENT University of Doncaster has moved a step closer to fruition after higher education in the town received praise from inspectors.

Inspectors from the Quality Assurance Agency have praised the degree courses currently operated by Doncaster College, in a report published this week after a visit in June.

The Integrated Quality and Enhancement Review found confidence in the college's higher education academic standards, quality of learning and public information - the highest accolade awarded in the review process.

Inspectors also praised the college's monitoring procedures, student progression opportunities, staff development opportunities and the relationship between staff and students.

The news comes on the back of the college applying to the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills for university status as part of the Government's University Challenge scheme.

College principal Rowland Foote said: "This is the perfect news ahead of our bid to become one of the 20 new independent University Centres set out by the Government - of which some will develop into fully-fledged universities.

"This report highlights the hard work college staff have put in over the past few years. We will continue to strive for success and take on board the suggestions made by inspectors."

Inspectors highlighted the college's "very close and productive relationship with the University of Hull that has significant benefits in terms of both quality assurance and enhancement".

College Vice Principal for Higher Education Mark Mabey said: "This is excellent news for undergraduate and postgraduate study in Doncaster.
