Pothole protest fury at Mayor's new path

WORKMEN moved onto the street of elected Mayor Peter Davies within months of his election to mend the pavements.

Mr Davies was elected to office last June - and last year council staff started work at Checkstone Avenue, Bessacarr, to resurface the paths.

The move was revealed to councillors at a meeting which saw Mr Davies tell them he tried to stop the work when he realised what had happened.

He said: "Unknown to me it had been put on a list of future plans to be improved. They arrived on the day and I knew nothing about it. I did my best to stop them doing it."

He told them after veiled reference had been made to the work during the meeting.

The news comes as Doncaster faces a major bill to resurface roads following the bitterly cold winter which has seen ice cause potholes across the borough.

Officials have estimated the cost of repairs will be at least 100,000.

The cabinet member responsible for highways compared Doncaster's road system to that of a third world country at a full council meeting last month.

Coun Richard Walker said 10.9 million extra should have been invested on repairing and treating roads since 1992, and said the council was checking all roads for damage after the cold spell, and encouraging councillors to notify the authority of any damage.

He said: "I have written to the mayor that in my opinion there is a 10 million shortfall in the roads."

Many of the recent problems have been caused by water getting into cracks which expanded when it has turned to ice.

A council budget approved by the council on Tuesday included 600,000 extra for road and 214,000 pavement repairs. It was given the go-ahead after the mayor's own budget proposals were thrown out.
