Pop idol Sam discusses education with Gordon Brown

WHEN Sam Nixon was a fresh-faced young Pop Idol contestant the Barnsley youngster could hardly have dreamed that within years he'd be mixing with the Prime Minister.

Sam, who shot to fame in the Pop Idol TV talent contest four years ago, is now a top BBC children's television presenter with his friend and fellow Pop Idol contestant Mark Rhodes.

And the pair accompanied young campaigners from the Global Campaign for Education to Downing Street to meet Gordon Brown and ask for his personal promise to help get every child worldwide into school.

This year marks the halfway point of the Millennium Development Goals when world leaders promised a primary education for all by 2015, yet 72 million children are still missing out.

The Prime Minister pledged to redouble efforts to get the remaining 72 million into school by 2015 and to improve their quality of learning.
