The Roma have bought a crimewave to Page Hall, it has been said. But is this entirely accurate?
Police figures suggest crime has declined over the last four months. In July, 218 incidents were reported. In September this had dropped to 193, and in October the number had fallen to 145. It is thought November will show another reduction.
Senior officers put this down to proactive policing, including the implementation of a dispersal order which has made it illegal for groups of under-16s to gather after 9pm.
Inspector Simon Leake, of the North East Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “I hope the order will continue to provide reassurance for residents and businesses who may have had issues with antisocial behaviour. The police will take robust action against offending.”
In regards to allegations of a baby being sold, he added: “No formal report was made to police. Extensive enquiries have been made. We are as satisfied as we can be that no criminal offenceshas taken place.”
