'Outstanding' features at improving school

AN ARMTHORPE primary school is celebrating after inspectors revealed it had improved to become a "good" school overall with some "outstanding" features.

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Primary School's rating saw it step up from its last inspection three years ago which handed it the lower assessment of "satisfactory".

Inspectors who visited the school in April said: "This is an improving school that is providing a good quality of education for its pupils.

"The committed leadership of the headteacher and governors, and developing strengths of the senior leadership team, are moving the school forwards."

Our Lady of Sorrows was also judged to be "outstanding" in several important areas including pupils' behaviour, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as well as promoting the welfare of children.

Inspectors also set the school two challenges - to ensure high achieving pupils reach above average standards in maths by the end of Year 6 and to improve attendance.

Attendance was judged to be average but inspectors said too many parents were taking pupils on holiday during school time.

Headteacher John McChrystal said: "The whole school community is delighted with our recent report which bears witness to the tremendous work done in school by the teaching staff, support staff, parents, governors and children."

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies said: "I will be making education one of my top priorities. I am delighted with the results of this Ofsted report and would like to congratulate all of the teachers, governors, pupils and parents involved at Our Lady of Sorrows."
