Helen Cousins, a single mum of two from Penistone and office manager for H.C. Starck, took the Ready, Steady, Cook challenge and tested a recipe for Strawberry shortcake from Kate Levick, a manager at Aizlewood’s Mill:
“The shortcake was relatively easy to make, but don’t be tempted to add more water when making it - it’s very crumbly at first, but comes together after a while,” says Helen.
“I made 25 at 13p each - a bargain - and they looked lovely. I decided to add my own twist and made half the batch as per the recipe and half with the addition of cracked black pepper. I also decorated half with double cream and half with creme fraiche.
We staged a blind taste test with my two teenage children to see which they preferred.
“The favourite base was the one with added pepper (it had added a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ but the taste wasn’t peppery).The favourite topping was predictably double cream.”
