No let-up in war on street yobs

POLICE say there will be no let-up in the fight against anti-social behaviour despite a big reduction in the problem across Doncaster.

Although there were 5,000 fewer offences over the past year, police and neighbourhood teams are determined to maintain a crackdown on under-age drinking in the street and nuisance motorbikes.

South Yorkshire Police and Doncaster Council's new summer slogan is: "We're tackling, not tolerating antisocial behaviour".

A borough-wide campaign has been launched to reassure the public that this issue is being taken seriously and inform them how to report any problems.

From June 2009 to last month there had been a 17 per cent reduction in anti-social behaviour in Doncaster compared to the same period the previous year, with 5,309 fewer incidents.

The borough's anti-social behaviour team - which consists of police, council officers, and St Leger Homes employees - share information more effectively to stop repeat offending by utilising a range of powers, including antisocial behaviour orders and drink banning orders.

Young people hanging around and drinking alcohol on the streets is one of the main concerns of residents, resulting in extra patrols being provided to tackle alcohol fuelled antisocial behaviour, as well as an increased number of test purchase operations to ensure alcohol is not being sold to under 18s.

Joint operations are also being set up in areas renowned for nuisance motorcycles, with bikes set to be seized and the riders prosecuted if they are found to be riding illegally.

Chief Supt Bob Sanderson said: "Doncaster is experiencing reductions in antisocial behaviour year on year through effective partnership working. I want to reassure residents that antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated and people will be dealt with appropriately should they behave in this manner. I would urge the public to continue to report any form of antisocial behaviour so that it can be dealt with effectively."
