News In Brief: Clothes lead to search of pond

FIREFIGHTERS searched a pond in Rotherham after a pile of children's clothes was found next to the water.

A worried passer-by raised the alarm after spotting the clothes on Thornwell Lane, Thorpe Hesley. Crew members from three fire engines were on stand-by at the pond while members of the technical rescue unit searched it at 8.45pm on Thursday. There was nobody in the water.

House ablaze

A PILE of rubbish set alight at the back of a house on Nesfield Way, Shiregreen, Sheffield, spread to the property. Flames damaged guttering and windows. Firefighters tackled the blaze. Firefighters also extinguished a chimney fire in a house on Worsbrough Road, Blacker Hill, Barnsley, dealing with the flames from the grate inside the property.

Woodland talk

SHEFFIELD Wildlife Trust is hosting a talk on local woodlands by Prof Mel Jones on Thursday September 16 at 6.30pm, at the trust's Stafford Street headquarters. The talk is followed by a buffet and the trust's annual general meeting. To book email mail@wildsheffield.com or call 0114 263 4335.

Clio set alight

A RENAULT Clio found burning on Challenger Crescent, Thurnscoe, Barnsley, is believed to have been deliberately torched. The blaze was extinguished by firefighters from Dearne and Adwick.

Oil fault car fire

A VAUXHALL Vectra caught fire on Davies Drive, Swinton, Rotherham, because of an oil problem, firefighters believe. They were called out to deal with the blaze after the car caught fire on the owner's driveway.

Pirates music

A SALVATION Army band is performing music from the film Pirates Of The Caribbean at a free concert in Sheffield on September 24. The Sheffield Citadel Band is holding the concert at Psalter Lane Church from 7pm.

Arson on bale

AN ARSON attack has been blamed for a bale of hay catching fire on Braithwell Road, Maltby, Rotherham. Firefighters extinguished the flames.

Roads closed to flatten bridges

THE demolition of disused railway bridges in the Sykehouse area of Doncaster will mean road closures in the vicinity up to the middle of November.

Doncaster Council has confirmed a section of West Lane will close from 6am on Monday until October 17 and a section of Willow Bridge Lane will be closed to traffic from Monday October 6 until Friday November 12.

Diversions will be in operation, and lorries over seven-and-a-half tonnes will have to take a long route to reach Sykehouse.

Quirky songs

THE Quirky Choir will be singing again every Wednesday evening from September 8 at The Point in South Parade, Doncaster, based on the principle that everyone can sing. Each session, from 6.45pm to 8.45pm, costs 3.

New start

THE ladies of Bawtry Fresh Start group meet in their new venue of the coffee lounge at the Phoenix Theatre on Monday September 13 from 7.30pm when members will be spending an evening with Pam Smith. Admission is 1 and includes refreshments.

Free entry

DONCASTER Aeroventure Museum on Airborne Road, Lakeside, is taking part in the National Heritage Open Days event on Saturday September 11 with a free entry day and guided tours at 11am and 2pm.

Plans bid

the owners of an acre of land in Melton Road, Sprotbrough, are seeking to continue planning consent for residential development which was first granted by Doncaster Councilthree years ago.

Green fun

green Guardians meet at Sandall Beat Community Environment Centre again tomorrow for a session of activities for young people from 10am to noon. Children must be accompanied by a parent.

Canal walk

doncaster Ramblers are looking forward to a leisurely 10-mile walk along Chesterfield Canal near Worksop, passing through Rhodesia and Shireoaks, on Tuesday.
