New recycling centre in bid to cut waste

A NEW recycling centre in Rotherham is at the centre of an ongoing bid to reduce the amount of waste sent to the town's landfill sites.

TP Wood Recycling at the Heritage Centre in Thurcroft is targeting some of the timber which is normally dumped on the tip.

It is part of TP Trading, the trading arm of the Treeton Partnership, a charitable organisation set up to help improve local communities.

Funded by South Yorkshire Key Fund, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Objective One, TP Trading generates income for the partnership which is then invested back into community projects.

"Over 10 million tonnes of timber waste is generated in the UK each year, but only 10 per cent of it is recycled," said Nic Marshall, chief executive of TP Wood Recycling.

"While Rotherham and South Yorkshire are working hard at improving recycling rates, our service can add significantly to that performance."

TP Wood Recycling has set out to reuse or recycle 80 per cent of all the waste wood it collects from its customers.

Companies who generate waste wood can contact the company's collection service and see material currently dumped in a landfill either re-used or recycled.

Waste wood will be transferred back to the company's site in Thurcroft, where it is sorted and stored.

Any long lengths, larger pieces of sheet material, doors or other re-usable items are sold back to the community for DIY or given to community groups or charities.

The wood recycling initiative is part of a wider operation across Rotherham to reduce waste taken to the town's landfill sites. Rotherham Council faces financial penalties from the Government unless it cuts its rubbish toll.
