Natalie to help kids in care

DONCASTER College is bringing in a dedicated worker to help more children in council care into post 16 education.

Natalie Marshall has joined the college as a full-time helper for young people who are in local authority care or have recently come out of it.

She will help them access further and higher education.

Although many colleges cover this aspect with outreach workers, the college believes it is the only place in Yorkshire to have a specific role for these youngsters.

It is estimated that there are about 430 children in council care in Doncaster, and 130 recent care leavers. And 25 of those 560 are currently at the college.

Natalie hopes this new role will help more young people access the college's excellent services and facilities.

She said: "Due to many factors including placement instability, emotional difficulties and changed routines only 2.9 per cent of these young people achieve five or more GCSEs grade A to C and that's not good enough.

"I want to help raise their aspirations, help them get these qualifications and move into college and even possibly university.

"I have helped develop an outreach network with key agencies and professionals to enthuse youngsters about further education and hopefully get them enrolled onto college courses.

"I'm also here as a problem solver for all the looked-after children and care leavers."
