MP's fears for grant axe

DONCASTER Central MP Rosie Winterton has written to Education Secretary Michael Gove raising concerns over plans to axe the Education Maintenance Allowance.

She says more than half of the students at Doncaster College receive the allowance, which pays 30 a week to young people aged 16 to 19 from families earning less than 30,800.

Around 60 per cent of Doncaster College students receive the EMA and it is viewed as having a positive impact on recruitment, retention and achievement by the college's principal George Trow, she says.
