Man discovered impaled on a railing
A MAN was impaled on a metal spike in a horrific freak accident in Doncaster today.
Firefighters were called to free the 31-year-old after he slipped and fell onto the spiked railing as he walked along a wall early this morning.
The man was discovered lying in agony, with his leg impaled on the spike, in Convent Grove, Bessacarr, by a teenage boy just after 3.30am today.
The boy alerted the emergency services and while paramedics administered pain relief a team of firefighters carefully lifted the man off the spiked railing which had penetrated his calf muscle.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the man, from the Rossington area, was in a lot of pain during the operation, which took five to 10 minutes. There was no need to cut the railing off.
The wall, outside a house on the estate, was about 3ft high.
The man did not offer an explanation of how he came to be on top of the wall in the middle of the night, said the spokesman.
