Man died after 'hearing voices'

A SEVERELY-depressed Doncaster man committed suicide after hearing voices from a relative telling him to kill himself, an inquest heard.

Tony Swift was found hanged from a climbing frame at the children's playground next to the Moorends Hotel, in Marshland Road, Moorends, where he lived alone in a mews flat.

His girlfriend Carol Hill - with whom Mr Swift had made a previous, joint suicide bid - said she was devastated because he "did not wait for her".

The court heard this implied she wanted to make a second attempt at a double suicide.

The day before Mr Swift's death, Miss Hill had given him a cord from her dressing gown. When he was cut down, there were two dressing gown cords round his neck, the other being his own.

Miss Hill found out what happened when she was woken by a relative telling her Tony's body had been found.

Mr Swift, aged 47, a chef, had been in a relationship with Ms Hill for two years but suffered from depression and had made previous suicide attempts.

In a statement, Miss Hill said: "Tony was severely depressed. He said he wanted to take his own life and he'd had enough.

"He had been mentioning a relative and was hearing voices from the relative telling him to take his life and join him. I tried to talk him out of this and kept an eye an him."

She added: "I am totally devastated, I loved him to bits."

Recording a verdict of suicide, Deputy Doncaster Coroner Fred Curtis said Mr Swift had expressed an intention to take his own life on a number of occasions and carried through his threat on June 2.
