Live & Unsigned, Sheffield Memorial Hall on Sunday

MORE bands than you can shake an earplug at descend from across South Yorkshire and beyond at this regional final for a national bands battle. It starts at noon with some favourites on the local live circuit - such as Pistola Kicks, The Regulars and Junction 31 - and newer bands including Thief Taker, The Gud Stuff (formerly Fudge) and The Basement Project.

"The winner will receive 20,000 investment and a recording contract," says drummer Chris Sanderson. "This is without doubt one of the biggest days of our lives so far and are hoping that we go all the way to the televised finals."

Tonight, meanwhile, you'll be hard-pressed to bag a ticket for Backhanded Compliments at The Leadmill - the promising band formed out of the ashes of Milburn - so we'd recommend Imelda May at Plug, The Silent Age at The Grapes and Grey Cooper, airing at The Harlequin some of the music bound for his imminent album, as varied alternatives.

If tribute acts is your thing there are two at The Venue, Stocksbridge tonight as Alan Morris and his band Blue Bayou play Roy Orbison's best loved hits and Two Of A Kind recreate the music of the Everly Brothers.

The latter features twins Michael and David Leadbeater who started as choirboys in their local church and landed acting roles in Emmerdale, Heartbeat and The Darling Buds Of May before forming their act for a national TV talent competition.

In a week when U2 released their somewhat disappointing new album you can hear the Irsh giants' classics courtesy of tribute act Original Achtung Baby at Rotherham's Blues Cafe.
