Joinery apprentices in Belgium trip
JOINERY apprentices employed by Doncaster Council have become the first to benefit from an exchange visit to Belgium.
Alistair Barnes and Adam Clark travelled to Hasselt in the province on Limburg and spent two weeks learning various construction skill – including an insight into the Wienerberger passive house building system, which is a technical way of installing walls. They also learnt how to construct eco buildings and spent time working in a joinery shop.
Adam said: "I really enjoyed the experience and I'm grateful for having this wonderful opportunity to work in a joiners' shop, making doors and learning how they were made in a different country with different techniques."
In previous years French apprentices visited the UK but this year an exchange programme has taken place allowing English students to visit Belgium for the first time.
French apprentice Mikael Brizion is due to spend two weeks studying joinery in Kirk Sandall this month.
Coun Jonathan Wood, cabinet member for business, said: "Apprentices are an important part of giving young people a good start in their working lives. "Doncaster Council is committed to supporting this programme but let's not forget it's not only students and the council who benefit from apprenticeships, businesses have done for years."
Doncaster Council offers one of the largest number of Craft Apprenticeship placements in the borough.
