Javelin thower aims for Olympics
DONCASTER tourism student Esther Stanger is hoping to take a trip to the 2012 London games - with her javelin.
Paralympic hopeful Esther is combining studying at Doncaster College on a three-day-a-week travel and tourism course with her training in the javelin, discus and shot put at Doncaster Athletic Club.
The 18-year-old was voted the BBC's Yorkshire Junior Athlete With a Disability of the Year last year and has been competing across the UK and Europe. Esther, who has cerebral palsy and only took up athletics in 2002, said: "I was so honoured and shocked to receive the award and now I just want to continue training and improving.
"f I keep improving I may, just may, have a chance of taking part in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
"But that is quite a way off and I want to study more and see if I can get employment. The College is great, I'm in my second year now and I really enjoy coming here. I want to get qualified so I can work in the leisure or retail industry."
Last year, Esther set a new age-group record in the javelin at the cerebral palsy National Championships and last month broke her personal best in the discus.
She added: "When I first took part in throwing at school I never thought I'd be able to do it but I can and I train as much as I can. I love competing and keeping fit."
