It's a Mi££ion thanks for our play facilities

THESE youngsters are enjoying the fruits of a £1 million handout to give Doncaster bigger and better play facilities.

Hundreds turned up at the revamped Quarry Park in Dunsville to join Doncaster Council staff in celebrating the completion of a new children's play area with a fun day event.

The new facilities have been created after the local authority received 1.1 million from the Department for Education to provide or refurbish 22 play areas across the borough over a two-year period.

In the past year nine sites have been completed at Atterby Drive, Rossington; Campsall Country Park; Ramskir Lane, Stainforth; Sandall Park, Wheatley Hills; Schofield Street, Mexborough; St Chad's, Denaby; St Mary's Road, Tickhill; Waverley Avenue, Balby, and Quarry Park.

The Dunsville park is the first to receive an 'official opening' which was celebrated with a 'country capers' fun day organised by neighbourhood management.

Highlights included a scruffs dog show and flyball, bat-a-rat, welly wanging, bungee running, sumo suits, birds of prey display, archery and pony rides.

Members of the neighbourhood team also made a number of old-fashioned games like skittles for children to try out.

Doncaster's Civic Mayor, Coun Margaret Pinkney, officially opened the event.

As well as providing a fun day out for local residents, neighbourhood officers are hoping that the event will encourage more local residents to get involved in the Friends of Quarry Park group.

Coun Andrea Milner, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "It is fantastic that we have been able to work with central government to provide these nine new play areas.

"Children across the borough are already enjoying the benefits of the Playbuilder scheme with 13 more sites to come over the next year."
