Is this your cat? Mystery of the long haul tabby

A HUNT has been launched to find the mystery owners of a tabby who hitched a ride nearly 100 miles from Doncaster to Birmingham.

Bosses at the RSPCA's animal hospital at Weoley Castle, Birmingham, were stunned when the animal was presented to them by a motorist who told them he had just bought a car in Doncaster through the website Bluecycle.

The firm works in the borough with Doncaster Motor Spares, on Bentley Moor Road.

The RSPCA's West Midlands spokesman Judith Haw said: "The cat was found asleep in the back seat of the finder's car.

"He had driven the car all the way from Doncaster. It was certainly quite a long journey for a cat to make without an owner.

"He had bought the car from a scrap dealer in Doncaster. I have called them and they said it isn't their cat but sometimes local cats use the cars to sleep in, so they are putting up posters in case she is owned."

The cat is a tabby and white female, and is described as elderly with few teeth. She is short haired, with no collar and no microchip.

Judith added: "This highlights the importance of having your pet microchipped - if this cat was we would have been able to re-unite her with her owner within hours, but as it is we have no idea who she belongs to."

Cats can sometimes climb into cars because they are warm and dry, especially if the engine has been on.

The charity has not ruled out the possibility that the cat was a stray.

A spokesman for Bluecycle said: "We have spoken to our site in Doncaster and they say no-one there has lost a cat.

"We wish the RSPCA every success in trying to re-unite the cat with its owner and will do anything we can to help it to do so."

Staff from the charity are now looking after the cat in Birmingham.

The owner of the cat, or anyone with information, should call the RSPCA's Birmingham Animal Hospital on 0300 123 8660.
