Intruders start blaze at trading estate
A HUGE pall of smoke hung over Hexthorpe and Doncaster town centre after a large quantity of plastic pallets went up in flames on a Doncaster trading estate.
Train passengers on the Doncaster to Sheffield line watched as fire crews brought the fire in Hexthorpe under control.
Crews from Doncaster, Edlington and Adwick stations were sent to the incident in Cherry Tree Lane after many people in the area called the emergency services.
They spent two hours using foam to extinguish the flames from burning pallets which had been torched by intruders in the area between the Sikh Temple and the Big Red Shed.
Photographer Alan Murray, who took this picture, said: "The blaze was watched closely by passengers on the Sheffield to Doncaster line.
"After returning to refill its tanks the crews eventually got the blaze under control, but not before a huge pall of smoke hung over the town centre."
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the fire looked worse than it was because of the amount of smoke produced by the plastic.
