In the buff in Buffalo

NORMALLY Croft House, like most am dram societies, have a hard enough job getting blokes on stage.

But when they held an open audition for The Full Monty the other Sunday they almost got knocked over in the rush from chaps itching to get their kit off.

"Sheffield is full of amazing talent," says production manager Barry Northall - and he was talking before they slipped out of their shirts.

Trousers don't come down until later in rehearsals.

He reckons he knows why men might fight shy with other shows - this page recently published an appeal for fellas - but not Monty.

"I went to see the show on Saturday in Manchester and was one of just 20 men in the audience. The women were going mad at every little bit of flesh.

"I think the fellows want to be screamed at!"

The show, at the City Hall from August 17-21, is already selling well even though ticket prices range from 10 to 25, pretty minty for an amateur performance.

"That's because they are prime seats, if you see what I mean. The women won't need binoculars but they might need torches," he chuckles.

It's 20 years since Croft were last at the City Hall. They've been at the Lyceum since 1990.

Now Croft are auditioning for the part of the lad, Nathan (played by Sheffield's William Snape in the film), at the Park Library, Duke Street, this Thursday (May 6) at 4.30pm.

He must look 12, can act, sing and dance, speak with use an American accent and have a two minute song prepared.

"It's a big part for a little lad. I don't care if he's 15 as long as he looks 12," says Barry.

The show is set not in Sheffield but Buffalo, hence the accents.

That's unavoidable as the film makers sold the rights to Americans who shifted the action across the Atlantic and their UK representitives will be watching to make sure there are no changes.

"Sheffield is The Full Monty's spiritual home but they won't allow us to change it," says Barry. "To be honest, after a few minutes you don't notice the accents," he promises.

Tickets on 0114 278 9789.
