Hexthorpe children back a winner with Frankie De-Story

RACING artwork designed by local artist and writer Phil Shepherd - famous for his alter-ego, Lollipop Man - has helped to launch the Doncaster Book Awards.

Hexthorpe Primary School children were commissioned to produce the artwork at the racecourse to link books with racing, to tie in with the change of venue for 2010.

Featuring a racehorse mid-gallop, the piece was made by sticking real used books and pages onto the 'canvas' with the background made of cut-outs of book characters depicting the crowd watching.

Lesley Hurworth, chair of the Book Awards said: "We all said a big thank you to the racecourse for being so hospitable when we displayed the brilliant artwork. The children absolutely loved it.

"The children gave the horse the brilliant name 'Bookie' and the jockey has been named Frankie De-Story, showing how interested the children were in the project."
