Healthy schools hit the century mark
DONCASTER has reached the 100 mark for the number of schools achieving the national Healthy Schools Award.
Teachers and pupils from six schools attended a ceremony in the Mansion House yesterday to collect their accolades, taking the total to 100.
The milestone means 77 per cent of schools in the borough now have a Healthy Schools Award - and Doncaster has already exceeded National Targets for 2009.
The Healthy Schools Awards is a national scheme set up by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department of Health.
It is administered locally by Doncaster Healthy Schools - a partnership between Doncaster Council and NHS Doncaster.
The awards recognise a school is a safe, healthy place to learn and work.
Latest schools receiving the awards, handed out by Doncaster's deputy director of public health Dr Rupert Suckling, were Armthorpe Southfield Primary, Coppice School, North Ridge Community School, Stone Hill School, Thorne Green Top Primary School and Denaby Main Primary School.
Coun Andrea Milner, cabinet member for children's services, said: "These awards recognise that Doncaster schools are places where youngsters are happy, healthy, feel secure, and learn to become valuable members of the school community. I am delighted that so many of our schools have achieved this honour."
Healthy Schools consultant Paul Burns said: "The aim of this award is to help raise of awareness of the importance of enjoying a healthy lifestyle.
"We are proud that 100 schools within Doncaster have now gained the national Healthy Schools Award. This recognises all the work that teachers, pupils, parents and governors have put in."
For a school to achieve national healthy school status, it must present evidence for meeting 41 criteria including emotional health, healthy eating, physical activity and drugs education.
