HEALTHY LIVING: Talk highlights fertility treatment

A NATIONAL health expert will be in Sheffield later this month to give a talk on fertility treatment.

Professor Robert Winston will be at Sheffield Hallam University, where he is chancellor, where he will lead the annual Westfield Health Lecture on Thursday March 25.

He has famously been involved in the BBC's 20-year Child of our Time project, which follows the development of 25 children from across the UK who were born in 2000.

The latest series explores the influences that shape personality and invites the British public to get directly involved in groundbreaking science with the Big Personality Test. The event takes place at 7pm in Sheffield Hallam's Pennine Theatre.

Breakthrough in Parkinson's fight

A NEW lead in the search for potential treatments for Parkinson's Disease has been discovered by researchers at the University of Sheffield.

The study, funded by the Parkinson's Disease Society, identified for the first time how two genes work together to remove the damaged sections of mitochondria from the nerve cells.

Once removed, the remaining mitochondria provide the cells with enough energy to work efficiently.

The team studied cells from fruit flies to see how the two genes behaved, with the results published online by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.

Raise money with African challenge

TAKE on the challenge of a lifetime and raise money for children with disabilities.

Children Today, which provides specialist equipment for disabled children to enhance their lives, is on the look out for volunteers to trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on their behalf. Participants who raise a certain amount in sponsorship will be able to take part for free.

Ceri Ward, from the charity, said: "People who take part in this event will be challenging themselves both physically and mentally every step of the way."
