Parents and children can learn about the importance of good dental hygiene, as well as enjoying reading session, at a special free event this week.
The half term event is happening at The Salvation Army’s Wombwell Corps on Park Street, Wombwell, on Friday between 1pm and 4pm.
The oral health team will be joined by school nurses and nursery staff, who will be showing how to develop speech through books and reading, as well as promoting good oral health.
As well as information and advice, gift packs will be on offer, and kids can take part in activities such as den building, games and crafts.
Oral health improvement worker Jillian O’Brien said: “Good oral hygiene is particularly important in this region as there is a low regular dental service attendance in many areas. Our team works to improve oral health and make people aware of the importance of keeping their teeth clean by brushing with fluoride toothpaste and having regular dentist appointments.”
According to NHS figures, 58 per cent of five-year-olds in Barnsley experience dental decay, compared with the national average of 40 per cent.
