HEALTHY LIVING: Campaign to boost MMR vaccines
A CAMPAIGN has been launched to boost the take-up of MMR jabs in Sheffield.
NHS Sheffield has set up the campaign to help achieve an immunisation rate of 95 per cent. Currently 89.4 per cent of two-year-olds have had the vaccine.
Ben Anderson, vaccination lead at NHS Sheffield, said "If we could get 95 per cent of the children in the city vaccinated against MMR we would achieve 'herd immunity'.
"This is where we can protect those who cannot be immunised – due to a reduced immune system after suffering from another illness such as cancer – because the prevalence of the illness would be so low if 95 per cent of children were vaccinated.
"Thankfully since Andrew Wakefield, the doctor who triggered the MMR vaccine scare, was recently struck off the medical register, people are realising that the vaccination is the safest and best choice for protecting your child and we are seeing uptake of MMR and the other childhood vaccines rise again."
The new poster campaign features a blue teddy bear. A leaflet will also be sent to all parents.
