Green homes scheme launch

THE organisation which has taken over the role of Doncaster New Deal for Communities has entered the green property market.

Doncaster Central Development Trust has redeveloped 31 homes with features including solar panels.

They are now due to go on the rental market in what is the organisation's first move into property letting.

Other features include extensive insulation, solar water heating systems - which use free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water - and air source heat pumps - which absorb heat from the outside air which is then used to heat radiators and hot water.

Jeremy Sherlock, head of assets at the trust, said: "We have properties in the town centre, Hexthorpe, Balby and Hyde Park.

"Each property has been renovated to a very high standard incorporating environmentally friendly features wherever possible.

"In many cases we have taken on previously empty houses as we felt there was a real need to take on board what were seen as problem properties. Unoccupied buildings attract certain negative social situations, and change them into places that will raise the aspirations in the community and provide those living in them with a good standard of accommodation.

"DCDT are now looking for tenants to turn these houses into homes. Our aim is to find tenants who will have a long term commitment to living in Doncaster and who are willing to participate in and enhance the local community."

The solar water heating systems use solar panels which are fitted to the roof. These collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water cylinder.

The air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside.

It can extract heat from the air even when the outside temperature is as low as minus 15C.
