Give the hard sell a rest Ryanair - I'm on my holidays

HOLIDAYS don't have a place on this page.

They're all about fun, excitement, adventure - a few weeks a year when you can really let go.

It's the coming back to reality that lends itself perfectly to a bitching column.

That and of course the budget airline which transported you back - two hours late naturally - already having managed to zap some of the sun-kissed colour from your cheeks in a mere few hours' journey from the continent.

It was probably my own fault for taking the mick out of Ryanair's ridiculous fanfare music on landing early in Italy on the outward bound journey, my jokes around the dinner table cruelly jinxing me for a delay on the return leg.

But such shameless self-congratulation deserved a ribbing, while the constant barrage of sales patter during a two-hour flight also surely warranted some stick?

It started as soon as the safety talk was out of the way - offers of an in-flight magazine, drinks and nibbles, full blown meals, scratchcards, perfumes, and - most hilarious of all - packets of cigarettes displayed in a decorative fan above the stewardess' head as she marched up and down the cabin.

I could have blown half my spending money before I'd crossed the Channel if I'd desired.

But I digress - it's the back to life, back to reality, scenario which I've been having trouble with this week.

I returned to the office on Tuesday after two and a half weeks off - a stretch of holiday which seemed like a lifetime on that last afternoon before breaking up.

The forever bemoaned problem is that it always goes too quickly, and as soon as you do return it feels like you've never been away.

Which is why as my tan fades beneath the fluorescent office lights, and I head to the supermarket in search of exotic ingredients to recreate holidays dishes South Yorkshire style, I'm already plotting the next adventure.

I know work won't feel as tough next week as my head reappears from the fluffy white clouds.

And however hard it can be to readjust to reality, it's a small price to pay for the fun and excitement you enjoyed.
