From one unusual football fan to another...
Victor Bonett comes from the sun-kissed Mediterranean island of Malta, 1,500 miles from Sheffield. But when it comes to the beautiful game there’s only one place he calls home: downtown Bramall Lane.
The 51-year-old Maltese, who now lives in Essex, travels to watch every United home match after falling in love with them six years ago.
He saw the team play while working for Visit Malta, who sponsored the club shirts between 2008 and 2011. After witnessing the side demolish QPR 3-0 (“Billy Sharp scored a hattrick”) he’s been coming back since.
“I’ve driven about 30,000 miles to watch home games ,” he tells The Diary. “Up until I saw that game against QPR I was, like many Maltese a Man United fan.
“But I loved United the moment I saw them. Everything about the place is special from the atmosphere to the staff.
The football? That’s frustrating. But you put up with it because you’re a Blade”
His favourite player is Harry Maguire. His favourite game was the 2009 play-off victory against Port Vale.
Now, Victor – who helps run the Sheffield United Supporters Club Of Malta (members: six) – is looking forward to Wembley.
“Can we beat Hull?” he ponders. “Errr...yes.”
