Former bakery site could be transformed
A FORMER Wheatley bakery could be transformed into a new business after it emerged developers have been eyeing up the site.
Lazarus Properties have bought the site of the former Oakdale Bakery on the Shaw Lane industrial estate in a deal believed to be worth around 1.4 million.
It is the latest purchase by the firm which has also taken over ownership of the historic Odeon cinema on Hall Gate.
Lazarus director Lloyd Nicholson confirmed they were planning to rent the building out as a commercial site and added there was already interest in the site from businesses interested in setting up there.
He said: "At the moment we don't consider this to be a potential redevelopment site, though of course we will listen to any ideas along those lines.
"It's a 40,000 square foot site and currently we're looking at renting it out. It would be an ideal building for a business such as a builders merchants or for a transport company."
When the bakery, which was owned by Bakesense Bakeries Ltd, closed last July 134 jobs were lost.
Bosses at the bakery, which had an 18 million turnover, blamed crumbling profit margins following soaring prices for commodities such as wheat and butter.
