Five charged after thefts from lorries

POLICE have struck a blow in the battle to reduce thefts from lorries parked near the A1 trunk route near Doncaster.

In the early hours of last Friday five men from the Leeds area were arrested on suspicion of the theft of goods from a curtain-sided lorry parked at the Brunel industrial estate in Harworth.

Their van, stopped near Worksop by Nottinghamshire officers, contained a quantity of air fresheners, later confirmed as the products stored in the lorry at Harworth.

All five men were charged with theft, and one was charged with driving offences. Four have been remanded in custody and one was bailed to appear at court.

Supt Mark Holland said: “These arrests bring the total number of people apprehended for committing acts of organised lorry crime in Nottinghamshire to 35 in the last six months. They are almost exclusively from the Leeds and Morley area and we are targeting criminals who are travelling from West Yorkshire to steal from lorries using the A1.

“Those statistics demonstrate how seriously we are treating this kind of crime, but also just how important it is for haulage firms and drivers to take steps which could prevent them falling victim to theft.

“I’d also like to emphasise that the arrest of these five determined individuals was down to some excellent co-operation between our divisional response officers and teams from our operational support division.”

The two divisions teamed up successfully in November with a police dog sniffing out 30,000 worth of electrical goods stolen from a curtain-sided lorry in Newark. One man, also from Leeds, was arrested in connection with the haul.

In July last year, the force teamed up with haulage firm Eddie Stobart to place a hoarding “ad-van” in laybys along the A1 to alert drivers that the area is a “hotspot” for load thefts.

Truckers have also been encouraged to use well-lit and used lorry parks, rather than lay-bys.
