Firefighters attacked by village yobs

BRICKS and bottles were hurled at two fire engines while crew members were extinguishing a blaze in South Yorkshire, fire chiefs have revealed.

The missiles were thrown at the fire appliances when they were parked on Kenworthy Road, Worsbrough Common, Barnsley, after two skips and a wheelie bin were set alight. CCTV footage from the fire engines is being examined.

None of the firefighters were injured in the attack but one driver who was making a radio call from his appliance only narrowly avoided getting hit when a brick almost went through an open window.

Group Manager Paul Salter, of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "It must have taken something the size and weight of a house brick to cause such damage.

"This was a disgraceful attack on a group of firefighters responding to an emergency. We will be doing everything to identify the culprits and ensure they are brought to justice."
