Final stage of demolition work on old cinema takes place
MOST of the Art Deco frontage of the Doncaster Odeon was pulled down yesterday in the final stage of the building's demolition, leaving the site ready for redevelopment in 2010.
One side of Thorne Road and East Laith gate was closed to vehicles and pedestrians for most of yesterday.
"We got down as much as we could yesterday but it's a very tight area so we needed to remove some of the rubble before we can finish it off, but we should be able to do that this week, said Geoff Ellis, safety manager for GBM Demolition contractors.
Mr Ellis said they hoped to have the site clear of rubble by the end of December.
The historical concrete frieze depicting the movie industry, which was above the cinema entrance, has been removed intact and put into safe storage for use on the new building.
The cinema was opened in 1934 as the Gaumont and in its heyday played host to concerts by The Beatles, Buddy Holly and the Rolling Stones.
