Driver is killed as his car hits tree

A DONCASTER man was killed after his car smashed into a tree on a country lane.

Fire crews were called to Fordstead Lane, at Almholme, between Arksey and Barnby Dun, just after 8am yesterday.

The 28-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was the only occupant of the Vauxhall Astra, which collided side-on with the tree not far from the junction with Marsh Lane.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash and police were yesterday trying to establish what caused the driver to lose control.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

They believe the driver, who was travelling from Arksey to Barnby Dun, lost control on a left hand bend, left the carriageway and collided with a tree, about 150 yards before the entrance to the old Thorpe Marsh power station.

They want to speak to the driver of a HGV which was travelling in the same direction along the same road, and may have been overtaken by the Astra prior to the collision.

They believe the driver of the lorry may hold vital information about what happened.

Police are also appealing to any other witnesses or anyone who saw the Astra travelling from Arksey, in close proximity to a silver coloured car, prior to the incident.

Witnesses are urged to called the Accident Witness Helpline on 0114 220 2970.
